Kid-Friendly ATVs in SWFL
ATVs are fun for the whole family. There’s nothing better than the wind in your hair, sun on your back, and a wide stretch of track ahead of you. Children of all ages are joining their parents on the road, experiencing southwest Florida the way it’s meant to be seen with kid-friendly ATVs.
More and more parents are opening up their arms to kid-friendly ATVs. While it may initially seem daunting, ATVs are a great way to get your kids outside, instill responsibility in them at an early age, and give them independence and freedom.
Kid-appropriate ATVs are not only available, they’re incredibly popular. ATVs are still vehicles and should be treated with the same safety, care, and understanding.
Before you buy an ATV for your child, you need to consider your child’s age, safety, and of course, what vehicle to choose!
Know Your Child
What’s your child like? How old are they? Are they perceptive? Can they reach the controls?
Before you even think about what kind of ATV to buy your child, you must first ask yourself, “Are they ready?” An ATV, no matter the size, is a powerful vehicle. There’s no right age for an ATV, it’s dependent on the child. Some kids are ready for the responsibility while others need to wait a couple years.
Safety starts with you, the parent.
Before you purchase an ATV, make sure that your child understands the safety concerns. Yes, your child rides with you while you’re on your own vehicle, but passing over the handlebars is a big step. If you think your child is responsible enough to handle their own ATV make sure they prove it.
Hit the books! Once you buy the ATV, sit down with your child and read the manual forwards and backwards. When you think they have the ideas down, try it in practice in a safe environment. Practice a little at a time until they get the hang of riding.
Take the first step in safety by enrolling your child into an in-person or online safety course at the ATV Safety Institute.
Choosing the Right ATV
Finding the right ATV boils down to what you want from the vehicle. There are many makes and models to choose from, but the most important aspect of the ATV is the engine size. Recommendations for kid-friendly ATV’s are:
- 6-11 Years old: An ATV with an engine size less than 70cc
- 12-15 Years Old: An ATV with an engine size between 70cc and 90cc
- 16 Years and Older: An ATV with an engine size larger than 90cc
